The Big Ten Conference is probably fortunate it doesn't have more cases on its hands of "bowl burnout" among fans who are tired of the same bowl destination.

That's a legitimate issue with the Wisconsin Badgers football team, which will likely be heading to Florida for the fifth straight year and to Orlando for the third time in the last four.

The Badgers played in the 2006 and 2007 Capital One bowls in Orlando and played in the  2005 and 2008 Outback Bowls in Tampa. UW seems almost certain to be selected for the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando when the selections are made official on Sunday night.

When the Big Ten shuffled its bowl lineup in 2006, adding the Champs Sports and Insight Bowl (Tempe, Ariz.), which replaced the Music City (Nashville, Tenn.) and Sun (El Paso, Texas), the likelihood of this situation increased, of course.

The Big Ten now has three bowl tie-ins to Florida, including two in Orlando. But the issue does not just include those bowls.

Ohio State is likely headed to the Fiesta Bowl for the fifth time since 2003, counting the 2007 national championship game. Of course, nobody tires of going to a BCS game, so that's not exactly an issue for Buckeyes fans.

Michigan played in the Capital One Bowl three times in four years, from 1998 to 2001.

Purdue played in the Sun Bowl three times in a four-year stretch and Minnesota did the same in the Music City.

If fans are going to get burned out on a place, they could do a lot worse than Florida. Yet, this remains a real issue as the Badgers attempt to sell tickets, especially during tough economic times.

Steve Hogan, the executive director of the Champs Sports Bowl, admitted this week that the Badgers' recent trips to Florida would probably put a damper on ticket sales.

"Although, some might argue, it's a little bit warmer, fans can be happy to make a trip down during holiday season to a good warm-weather market," Hogan added. "You're concerned about it, but it's not an impedement (to inviting UW) as long as the team feels they're happy with where they're going and it's a reward for what they're doing."

One of the issues is that the Capital One and Outback bowls are back-to-back in the pecking order (second and third selections), after the Rose Bowl. That means the same pool of Big Ten Conference teams often seems to be in the running for those bowls. The Champs alternates with the Alamo Bowl for the fourth or fifth pick. This year, the Alamo picks fourth and the Champs is fifth.

The Big Ten certainly can make a strong case that it upgraded its bowl lineup when it added the Champs and Insight, although the option of driving to Nashville was always welcome for some fans.

It doesn't seem like anybody in the Big Ten is too worried about bowl burnout, although Hogan acknowledged it's something worth keeping an eye on.

"It's certainly something to pay close attention to," he said. "We want it to be a reward for the conference. I'm sure we'll stay close to the commissioner and the conference and the athletic directors and make sure they feel comfortable with the slots they have, either here in Florida, or if they feel there's a better scenario or mix in the next cycle, we certainly are going to be paying close attention to that."

This whole issue of bowl burnout is sort of funny. We seem to have short memories to the 70's and 80's where even being in the running for a bowl was a big deal. We should be very proud of our programs at the UW - both academic and athletics - - as they compete with the best!

The Big 10 should really look for an affiliation with the Las Vegas Bowl. Wisconsin fans (and Midwesterners generally) never seem to tire of traveling to Sin City!

Location may not be the principal obstacle. I would suggest that the date -- December 27 -- is the biggest problem with the Champs Sports Bowl. Being only two days after Christmas, that Bowl puts a lot of people in the difficult position of having to travel on the day following Christmas. Who wants to do that? Any later date, such as the Insight.com bowl is preferable in that regard. Maybe some of these bowls (i.e.Champs) should consider changing its date to a date later after Christmas to facilitate a larger attendance?
