The Shag Bag: Kelly... Faldo made 'big mistake' with Poulter
Not only does Madison's Jerry Kelly believe the Americans are hungrier than ever to reclaim the Ryder Cup this weekend, he thinks Nick Faldo's choice to go with Ian Poulter as a captain's pick over Darren Clarke was a huge mistake.
Clarke has a 10-7-3 record in five Ryder Cups, while Poulter is 1-1 in only one Cup (2004).
"I think Europe is a much weaker team without Darren Clarke," Kelly said earlier this week. "You put Clarke in there instead of Poulter and I think that's three points less (for the Europeans). I don't know anybody on the U.S. who can't beat Ian Poulter. I don't know too many who can handle Darren Clarke in a Ryder Cup.
"I think that was a big mistake by (Nick) Faldo. And I think that's going to drive a little wedge between the Europeans."
Poulter is the flamboyant Englishman known for his flashy attire and outspoken personality.
In January, Poulter said he was the only player capable of challenging Tiger Woods.
"I think they'll be plenty of clippings to go up on the wall coming out of that boy," Kelly forecasted.
Don't be surprised if Kelly's right.
