Alesia: Richland Center country fest setting summer lineup
TOM ALESIA
I know, I know, summer seems so far away. But Richland Center's country music-fueled Star Spangled Celebration already has five acts set for its June 25-27 event.

Country star Gretchen Wilson, who rocketed to fame a few years ago, headlines June 27's finale. On June 26, the lineup features Blake Shelton and Rodney Atkins, both consistent hitmakers. James Otto performs on June 27 and former "American Idol" contestant Kellie Pickler on June 25. Another eight or nine acts will be added to the lineup by next spring.

Run by hundreds of volunteers, the non-profit Star Spangled Celebration differs from so many other major summer music fests in that the events proceeds go to Richland Center area organizations.

And, yes, tickets are available now as holiday gifts. Go to www.starspangled.com for information or call 800-375-0876.

Bruuuu-ccce

No, not Springsteen. Cult movie hero Bruce Campbell brings his independent horror-comic film to Sundance Cinema for two screenings on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The film, "My Name Is Bruce," follows Campbell playing himself when he's confused as his character Ash from three "Evil Dead" films and must fight a monster.

Campbell will hold a Q&A session at both screenings at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Go to www.madisonhorror.com for details.

Asylum Street Spankers

The Asylum Street Spankers have been entertaining club audiences for 15 years with a delicious blend acoustic and old-fashioned tunes delivered with plenty of humor (especially between songs). Whether you've never seen the Spankers or you've seen a dozen times, the Austin, Texas, band is worthwhile to check out at its 7 p.m. gig at High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Ave., on Tuesday. (Info is at www.high-noon.com.)

And odds are, you'll enjoy it enough to consider buying "What? And Give Up Show Biz?," the band's new two-disc live album.

Bed races

Why stay in bed on a Sunday morning when you can race one?

Stoughton's Victorian Holiday, Dec. 5-7, features the bed race at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Entrants are encouraged to wear nightshirts, caps or pajamas. Form a five-person team — four pushers and one (light, I'm assuming) rider — and go to www.victorianholidayweekend.com for info. And get ready to really push if there's snow.

Madison musicians help out

Mark Dec. 6 on your calendar to support a great cause and see a fantastic sampling of Madison's best music acts. Madison-area musicians will celebrate the release of a compilation CD, "Madison For World Health," supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis locally and in Africa.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Majestic Theatre. Among the acts scheduled to perform are Mark Croft, Rob Dz, Marques Bovre & SoDangYang, Jim Schwall, Eric Hester, Fountain of Life Gospel Choir, Atimevu and many others.

See www.madisonforworldhealth.com for ticket and CD information.

Happy 80th

Who says local bands don't stay together? The New Glarus Yodel Club celebrates its 80th birthday this month. One of its earliest gigs was in Forreston, Ill., for Sauerkraut Day.

Return each Sunday to A&E for more news and opinion by Tom Alesia, talesia@madison.com. Until then, go to www.madison.com/wsj/home/entertainment for more local entertainment coverage and Madison's most complete guide to upcoming shows in Coming Attractions.
